Len writes,
Chateau de Beaucastel has been one of the benchmarks and best wines of the southern Rhone's Chateauneuf du Pape for decades. Founded in the 16th, the Perrin family has owned it since 1909. Unlike most other Chateauneuf du Papes, Beaucastel subsumes the Grenache grape under different varieties, sometimes using all thirteen permitted grapes. Thus, their wines are bolder, spicier, and more complex than many of their peers.
More recently, the fifth generation of the Perrin family expanded the domain, acquiring more vineyards in Chateauneuf and neighboring communes
They have modernized the winery and evolved their formerly age-demanding wines to be more accessible younger. On tasting some current releases, I felt that they had succeeded in that, at the same time, essential spicy character that was the hallmark of the 20th-century version.
We are delighted to welcome Emmanuel Lemoine from the winery, to lead us through a tasting of some current Perrin releases.
The Perrins feel that their 2020s rank among the best their estates have ever produced. Of the vintages going back to 1983 I have tasted, I think that they may be right.
We'll taste six estate wines from a youthfully hearty Cotes du Rhone villages through Gigondas and Chateauneuf, culminating in the outstanding 2020 Beaucastel and the Grand Vin Hommage a Jacques Perrin a strict single parcel selection only made in the finest vintages. It might be the finest wine from Beaucastel I have ever tasted.
The Famille Perrin Cotes du Rhone Villages is a structured hearty wine that is half each Syrah and grenache, drawn from the appelations Cairanne and Vinsobres.
The 2020 Vinsobres, from the same grape blend, is richer and smoother, almost silky to the tongue.
The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape les Sinards is made from younger vines from Beaucastel enriched with grapes from a newly acquired vineyard. It is as good as some other estates' Grand vin.
The 2020 Gigondas Clos de Tourelles was flown in, especially for our tasting. It is a single vineyard at the foot of the commune. I have not yet tasted it, so include a critic's notes below.
The two estate Beaucastels are sumptuous. You do not want to miss them. You can appreciate them now, but both need time to show their stuff

2020 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin;
« a monumental effort. It dazzles with pristine aromas of rose water, crushed violets, red and black cherry, blueberry, forest strawberry, licorice, dried lavender, bay leaves, sage, black olive, and cardamom. Firmly formed like a skyscraper, the wine continuously builds on the palate, exposing layer upon layer of jewel-like fruit. As the taste develops, pixelated tannins enter the scene, adding to the wine's seamless mouthfeel. Despite the elevated flavor concentration, the wine is so light on its feet that tasting it is an almost ethereal moment." Vinous
