Six Wines for Spring
La Saison Naissante (The Budding Season) is a time for new, fresh wines. Some of the best here!
March 19, 2025
Bud break is the first sign of spring, a significant event in a vineyard's life cycle. To celebrate the beginning of a new vintage, we would like to share vibrant, aromatic, crisp, and harmonious white wines along with two versatile reds with balanced fruit, supple tannins, and great drinkability
White
2023 Chelti Winery, Kisi Family Collection
Kisi is a traditional white grape in the eastern part of Georgia, in the Caucasus. Chelti winery made this one in a decidedly modern manner. It is light, clean, fresh, and acidic, with a nice acidity to go well with any seafood dish.
What makes it special: Forceful linear purity with great concentration at a very reasonable price.
Aroma: Herbal, fine tannin, heady, very rich, firm, intense; Mouth: Bright, rounded sweet, firm, spicy, intense, long; Very Good Plus $18.99; Case, $15.99
2022 Famille Hugel Alsace Gentil Blanc
In Alsace, wines that blend noble grape varieties were called Gentil. Hugel's version melds the suave, spicy flavor of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the generous fruit of Muscat, and the refreshing character of Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. It is a kaleidoscope of fruit produced exclusively from hand-harvested grapes in predominantly clay and limestone vineyards from a dozen favored localities in and around Riquewihr. A cool and long growing season gives this unique dry wine great finesse and unequaled drinkability.
Aroma: Elegant and fresh, perfumed with spring blossom, jasmine, white rose, green apple, and white peach. Mouth: Tropical fruit, honeydew melon, refreshing acidity with a crisp and clean finish. This Alsace blend is a fantastic choice for pairing with seafood, light salads, or fresh cheeses. Very Good Plus $16.99, Case $14.99
2023 Josef & Philipp Brundlmayer Kremstal Gruner Veltliner
Nothing says spring quite like Gruner Veltliner. Wildflowers and fresh herbs from an alpine meadow come to mind. This wine reflects the Brundlmayer family's dedication to quality and tradition in the heart of Austria's Kremstal. The vineyards are deeply rooted in unique soil types that impart a distinctive minerality and complexity to the wine. With its warm days and cool nights, the microclimate allows for optimal ripening while preserving the grape's natural acidity.
Aroma: Ripe stone fruits, citrus zest, and a hint of white pepper, complemented by subtle floral notes. Mouth: crisp and lively, featuring flavors of green apple, peach, and a touch of spice. The wine exhibits a harmonious balance between its fruit-forward character and refreshing acidity, leading to a clean and invigorating mouthfeel.
Very Good Plus $16.99, Case $14.99
2023 Sa Raja Tarra Noa Vermentino di Gallura
This wine from northeast Sardinia has a unique combination of granite stone minerality, the brininess of the nearby Mediterranean Sea, and delicate accents of acacia flowers and lemongrass made it an immediate favorite for our customers. If you've tried Vermentino from other regions, the quality and elegance of this wine will surprise you.
Aroma: Captivating, delicate, and complex, with notes of yellow flowers, tropical fruit, myrtle, and wild herbs. Mouth: Crisp lemon and stone fruit notes paired with striking minerality and an electric vibrancy make this a standout. This is the perfect choice for those who love refined, refreshing white wines.Very Good -Excellent $21, Case $17.99
Red
2022 Le Piane, La Maggiorina Rosso
This is a fresh, vibrant red wine field blend of Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina, and other indigenous varieties from Northern Piedmont's Boca region. It is named after the traditional vine training system and pays homage to the area's winemaking heritage.
Aroma: black raspberry, cherry cordial, black pepper, black tea, menthol, sage and tarragon. Marasca cherry comes through on the palate with chalky tannins and peppery arugula, with touches of rhubarb and raspberry on the finish. A fitting wine for delicate mushroom dishes, duck, or tender cuts of beef. Very Good Plus $25.99, Case $21.99
2023 Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Jour de Soif
Jour de Soif, "Thirsty day tells you what this wine is about." Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley is done in a lighter, prettier form that flows easily across the palate. It's not a blockbuster but has an enjoyable, easy approach. Great stuff for early drinking, even slightly chilled when it's hot, full of fruit, given definition by a light, fine tannic line.
What makes it special: Balance, balance, balance in a fully fruited wine.
Color: medium dark black; Aroma: light bright, clean, fresh & lifted, relatively bright; Mouth: clean & firm, nice depth of flavor, bright over deep dark plum, fruit over very fine tannin on the finish; Very Good Plus$21.99; Case, $18.99
