This Week Wednesday, January 7, 2025 Selected Wines from our Offers In-Store, 5 - 6:30pm   |
This week, some of our favorite wine offers that we have not included in a tasting.
2022 - Hamilton Russell Chardonnay
It has been too long since we tasted Hamilton Russell in-store. Anthony’s Chardonnay has been a mainstay of our offerings of that grape. Like white burgundies, Hamilton Russell chardonnays improve with age. The 2022 is better to drink now than the 2023
The wine takes time to open, which foretells long life. Open this ahead of time and do not overchill it.
Decanter "Subtle at first on the nose and palate, this builds with floral aromas and a hint of spice, together with succulent white peach and pear fruit on the palate. Oak is supple and beautifully integrated. Deceptively powerful, there is a mineral, almost steely, edge which will give this a long future.… a classic example of Chardonnay from the Lower Valley."
Excellent, Was $53, Now $40 Case $32.99
2024 Montenidoli Tradizionale Vernaccia di San Gimignano
Montenidoli is a winery that epitomizes the dedication and passion of its founder, Elisabetta Fagiuoli. With a commitment to organic viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar, Montenidoli has established itself as a benchmark for Vernaccia, being recognized by Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri and Wine Spectator’s Top 100 in previous vintages. Aroma: Golden apples, pear, dried apricot, chamomile, lemongrass, dried orange peel, and wild English gardens.
Mouth: Rich body, fleshy orchard fruit, great structure, balanced acidity, English herbal tea, and plenty of complexity with a captivating finish. Very Good Plus $29.99, Case $25.49
2023 Domaine Sérol Côte Roannaise Éclat de Granite
Gamay loves granite
The Loire River rises in the high gorges of the foothills of the Massif Central. Closer to Beaujolais than to Sancerre or Touraine, the granite soils, similar to those of Beaujolais crus, create ideal conditions for Gamay. The wines labeled Côte Roannaise have a taut, mineral edge, more than most Beaujolais.
There, Domanie Serol, a fifth-generation family-run estate, is a leading producer. Organic and biodynamic, its Gamay has a lovely, appetizing, tense energy. Their wine is true to its name; a burst of granite dazzles. I loved it for its snappy forest berries and crackling white spice.
Aroma: Dark granite mineral, intense, plummy; Mouth: Clean, excitingly bright with some cherry and smoke, and nicely integrated dark fruit with an edge, bright long finish; Very Good Plus $22.95; Case, $19.99
2024 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo
Sourced from younger vines in the Vajra family vineyard estate, their Nebbiolo fruit still showcases some of the prized characteristics of the Barolo wines G.D. Vajra is known for. Excellent balance, silky tannins, balanced fruit concentration, intoxicating spice, and floral fragrance make this classic Nebbiolo so enjoyable. Aroma: Fresh raspberry, black cherry, rose petals, porcini mushroom, white pepper, anise, and orange blossom. Mouth: Red currants, ripe cherry, bay leaf, savory balsamic notes, vibrant acidity, and a persistent finish.
Very Good $24.99, Case $21.49
2024 Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano
A lively red wine from the southern coastal area of Tuscany that makes an excellent pairing for Saturday dinner with friends and family. A versatile food wine that can be paired with most meals and pleasing to palates for those who really enjoy red wine. Aroma: ripe marasca cherry, blueberries, red berries, underpinned by violets, cedar, espresso, cinnamon, and balsamic notes. Mouth: Silky and fresh, crisp with fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity, toasted spices, savory red fruit compote with a fresh cherry spice lingering on the finish. Very Good Plus $21, Case $17.99

Featured in the federal case for its quality-to-price, this Bordeaux from our friends the Arbo family comes from just northeast of St. Emilion. It is two-thirds Merlot, with more Cabernet Franc than Cabernet Sauvignon making up the rest. In the fine 2020 vintage, it is surprisingly robust, concentrated, and deep. It is just now entering its drinking period, Ripe and smoky, with good body, great black fruits, and tannins. It is rich, with dense., concentrated fruit and good structure, You can drink it now with some air ahead; it will easily age for another four or five. Very Good Plus $21.99, Case $18.99
