We are happy to welcome Maude Autran, the daughter of Sophie and Jean-Marc Autran. She is the fifth generation to carry on Dom. de Piaugier’s mission to craft delicious and surprisingly affordable wines from their 30 hectares of vines spread through Cotes du Rhone, Sablet, and Gigondas vineyards. The Autran’s vines are typically 35-60 years old, in their prime to produce wines that convey the soil in which they are planted, whether it be clay/limestone, clay/chalk, or the sandy soils for which the village of Sablet is named. Since 1947, the family has grown traditional southern Rhone varietals, which they use in their classic, terroir-driven Gigondas and Sablet.
The Wines
Piaugier has always offered wines of value for less money than their peers.
All wines Except the Cotes du Rhone are Sablet Cotes du Rhone Villages.
The white Sablet is exceptional for its price. It is as full and concentrated as many a Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc and more savory than many. Its barrel-fermented blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne makes for a heady, rich, concentrated wine.
We have not tasted the current editions of the Grange de Piaugier or Sablet but have liked previous versions of their Grenache Syrah and Cinsault a lot., especially for their values
The TénébI is an unusual all-Counoise cuvée, which makes for a lighter, pepper-accented wine. Then, there are two pure syrahs. The Syrah de Marine is aged in older barrels for 18 months; the Reserve de Maudeis an aged selection in new oak. We will have limited samples of these. Come early and have a chance to taste them!
