Greatly Reduced Prices on Carefully Selected Wines

In-store, 5 - 6:30pm

Distributors are making room for quantities of wine that come this fall because of the threat of January tariffs. Some must make room for new vintages. We've seen many opportunities to buy at significant discounts.

We came. We saw. We tasted. Rampaging through their warehouses, we found some character-filled but overlooked wines and chose these great values for you.

Spice Up Your Everyday Wines

Two Dry Whites from A Fine German Estate

Wittmann is an excellent estate in the heart of Germany's Rheinhessen. We have some reserve bottlings at over $100 a bottle. Their more basic wines have the same purity of fruit and care in production. We found two to offer at ridiculously low prices, low enough for you to open without a thought enjoy, with fish and chips or rotisserie chicken.

Germans do spicy Silvaner best. It's great with more substantial fish dishes. Weisser Burgunder is Pinot Blanc. Wittman's version is broad and mouth-filling with a following smidgen of delicate acid spice.

2020 Wittmann Sylvaner Trocken; Aroma: very herbal, tangy acid, an herb oak note  tangy acid tangy; Mouth: bright, clean, so lively on the tongue that it suggests spritz, an herbal note on the finish; Very Good Plus Was $20 Now $14.99; Case, $12.99

2020 Wittman Weisser Burgunder (Pinot Blanc); Aroma: heady and soft, broad low acid, heady and spicy; Mouth: bright, clean rounded, tangy lean, spicy acid rounded and fleshy bright acids spice; Very Good Plus Was $22 Now $18.99; Case, $15.99

Red

High up in the Argentine Andes, the Finca Decero estate makes finally delineated wines that were among my favorites on a trip to Mendoza a few years ago. Their everyday Cabernet has some of that, with dense cassis and smoke fruit underlined by good food-friendly acidity. A classy companion to a burger or better.

2019 Finca Decero Cabernet Sauvignon Flight of the Condor; Aroma: fresh, light clean, very pretty and forward, heady spice intense; Mouth: light, clean, classic Cabernet, nicely matured, sweet fruit, bright and intense, food-friendly acidity, clan long; Very Good Was $14.99 Now $12.99; Case, $Special case $9.99

Two Mid-Range Reds

From New Zealand for Pinot Purists

2020 Paper Road Pinot Noir

Leaner, more structured, more like a dark-fruited red burgundy than a soft pinot bomb, this will please lovers of Pinot Noir's elegant style. Give it time in the glass to open and reveal restrained fruit over a classic structure.

Color: light to medium black; Aroma: good aromatic drive, dark cherry plum with an accent of rhubarb, lightly wood limned; Mouth: bright with dryish acid drive, very ripe fruit, with an assertive food-friendly acidity, lithe on the plate, good length; Very Good Plus Was $22 Now $17.99; Case, $14.99

2021 Michael David Cabernet Sauvignon

Classic Lodi cabernet with lots of fruit and balancing structure.

Color: very dark; Aroma: heady and sweet, firm and reserved, spicy berry, low pretty; Mouth: sweet, smooth, clean, light pretty, fine acids, nicely balanced smooth texture, good length ripe/sweet on the finish; Very Good Plus Was $32, Now $25.99; Special Case, $19.99

Special Wines

Two Classic Chardonnays

2020 Domaine Coste-Caumartin Saint Romain Le Clos du Chateau

Very broad and mouth-filling, dry with a flinty overtone, this is a big, broad white burgundy with lots of intensity.

Color: golden; Mouth: big in the mouth, with strong flinty minerality, very good weight, pure and clean, relatively broad, and mouth-filling, wants big white wine dishes, long; Very Good - Excellent Was $60 Now $35; Case, $29.99 Only 2 cases

Five years old and still young

2019 Nicolas Jay Chardonnay Bishops Creek

There is a lot of material in this mouth-filling Chardonnay from one of our favorite Willamette producers, led by Burgundy's Meo Camuzet. It wants time in the glass or bottle to show its stuff. From a high-elevation vineyard, it has well-integrated oak in a cool, flinty expression of Chardonnay.

"Alluring and complex aromas of fresh herbs, baked lemons, peaches, hazelnuts, and a hint of olive oil. Medium-bodied with wet-stone mineral character. Linear, balanced, and long. Supple texture. Notes of chamomile tea and straw just start to peek out towards the finish. This will age beautifully, but it's hard to resist now. "Excellent Was $95, Now $75; Case, $65, 18 bottles only

A Neo-Classic Red

2018 Finca Decero Cabernet Franc Remolinos Vineyard

The finesse is unmistakable, and the fruit is generous but does not obscure the grape's character. A successful rendition that satisfies on many levels.

"Juicy and fuller on the mid-palate than most Loire reds. Dry end but glossy and gorgeous with some fragrance. Polish. Well done!" Jancis Robinson

Color: very dark, black center ruby edge; Mouth: vibrant, very dense, bright, clean, fine, rich in the mouth with an edge of fine acidity, very bright young; Excellent $29.99; Case, $25.49
