The Wines of This Week's Tasting:

Great German Estates
October 6, 2026

White

2025 Familie Friedrich Becker Pinot Blanc, Pfalz

The notes are from Vinous on the 2023. 2025 is certainly to be better and fresher

from grapes picked in the limestone soils of Rechtenbach and Schweigen, fermented in used barrique. Slight smoke on the nose wraps itself around gentle creaminess with a lemony overtone. The palate is bright and textured. The nose's smokiness turns into smooth nuttiness that blends with the lovely tanginess of the wine. The finish is beautifully lemony, tangy and lasting. (Bone-dry)

$27.95, Case $23.95

2023 Bruno The Karthauser Riesling Kabinett Feinherb, Mosel

Wine Advocate deep, refined and generous on the finely flinty and slate-like nose. Rounder and much more generous than the 2024 vintage, this is an intense and mouth-filling yet filigreed and crystalline Kabinett with a long, intense and persistently structured finish. 9.5% stated alcohol

$27.95, Case $23.95

2022 Rebholz Riesling Estate Trocken Dry, Pfalz

We have been offering Rebholz wines for over 20 years now. The winery has certainly one of Germany's finest; with a range that begins with this elegant Riesling and continues to elegant and precise single vineyard GG Riesling and Pinot Blanc

Vinous It opens with a vividly fresh nose of green apple and a citrus spray. The palate is mellower and rounder than the nose suggests, with ease and flow, very light, bone dry and vivid freshness. The 2022 is clean-cut with an actual echo on the finish. (Bone-dry)

$37, Case $32

2022 Schafer-Frohlich Vulkangestein Riesling Trocken, Nahe

My notes from June Color: light green gold; Aroma: heady and intense    bright but rounded   savory; Mouth: fleshy and bright ripe  fullish fat, clean fine acidity,  bright acid, clean lingering g acid finish; Excellent

$50, Case $43

2023 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese Mosel

One of the top Mosel , with rich layered and complex off dry rieslings that age very well. Last weekend I was lucky enough to taste some glorious that were just hitting their peak.

Wine Advocate very intense and open on the complex and saline nose that is reminiscent of crushed slate rocks as well as ripe and intense, dense citrus fruit intermingled with lemon aromas. Round and refined on the palate, this is a lively and savory Riesling with a firm, mineral structure and floral flavors on the complex and youthful finish. This is a Spätlese to be aged for at least 5+ years. 8%

$77, Case $65

Red

2022 Meyer-Nakel Blue Slate Pinot Noir, Ahr

The tiny Ahr is one of Germany’s northernmost wine regions and is renowned for its elegant, precise Pinot Noirs. There Meyer-Nakel is one of the best.

Decanter notes on 2021 “While ripe and concentrated in black cherry and raspberry flavours, veins of graphite and menthol lend a nervous shiver through its spine. There's a grip of wood tannins and a piquant spice throughout but it's elegant and deeply satisfying, should continue to improve. This is a profoundly stony, salt-etched expression of Dernau's cooler blue-slate vineyards.

$77, Case $65

2018 Meyer-Nakel Blue Slate Pinot Noir

We have just a few bottles and so will not open this.

Wine Advocate  from steep, blue slate slopes and vinified in matured oak, …offers a warm, deep, intense and generous bouquet. Full-bodied on the palate, this is a silky-textured and finely acidic, grippy and salty Pinot Noir with intensity, power and warmth but also finesse.

$85, Case $73 limited to stock
