2020 Casanova di Neri Giovanni Rosso + 2017 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino
Something New in Montalcino, and One of Montalcino’s Originals
October 28, 2022

In 1971 Giovanni Neri bought the Podere Casanova farm in Montalcino and proceeded to turn it into a Brunello vineyard. He thought it was a great location to make great wine and proved right. In 1986 his son Giacomo joined the farm. It soon became apparent that Casanova di Neri's wines were among the best of Montalcino. The last time I was there, Giacomo and his two sons, Giovanni and Gianlorenzo, showed me a vineyard they had purchased in 2018. They were wondering what to name it.
I suggested that they name it Giovanni Neri to honor Giacomo's father. They liked the idea, and now we have the Giacomo Neri vineyard. Now we have its first wine, the 2020 Casanova di Neri Giovanni Rosso. It's as good as any Brunello, and the Consorzio that makes the rules there has decided that starting next year, it will be Brunello officially.
In a way, I feel like its godfather.

2020 Casanova di Neri Giovanni Rosso: Lively bright red. Dark cherry and strawberry with aromas of flowers and herbal notes of myrtle and thyme. Harmonious and elegant with a balanced old vine texture. Well-integrated tannins and bright acidity. Long silky finish. Excellent 70/bottle
Special six pack: 6 bottles of the above for a special price of $357 (59.50/bottle)
Speaking of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello, Giuseppe Cencioni, owner of the Capanna Brunello estate, was one of its founders. Capanna is a very traditional and biodiverse property; the wines are always top-notch. The vineyards are in the north area of Montalcino in the Montosoli zone. The 2017 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino is the wine of the vintage for me because it is also quite complex in addition to being approachable.
2017 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino: Bright ruby. A panoply of red berries and roses. Persistent full flavors with balanced tannin and acidity. Notes of juniper and chestnut and a round, complex finish. Excellent 75/bottle
Special six pack: 6 bottles of the above for a special price of $384 (64/bottle)

Mixed six-pack, three of each: $370.50
