It is axiomatic that the best places to find value in inexpensive burgundy these days are out of the way or overlooked: places where lower land costs, climate warming, and talented winemaking come together
I must have driven through Saint-Desert (pop 900) without stopping several times. It’s in the Cote Chalonnaise on the road south from Givry toward Cluny
There is a prized vineyard there. Mont Avril is south-facing with limestone, precisely the terroir you would find in a prized vineyard of a more noble appellation. It’s a tweener between Givry and Montagny but belongs to neither, so it has the Cote Chalonnaise appelation.
A few weeks ago, I realized what I had been missing when I was presented with a single vineyard red and white from that commune
France’s Guide Hachette knew already. They wrote of the family:
Winemakers from father to son since 1600, the Goubards are very well established in Côte Chalonnaise, with no less than 38 ha of vines at their disposal.”
and of the Pinot Noir:
“This plot of 1.5 acres planted with 35-year-old pinot noir has given this purple wine of beautiful depth. It reveals fruity aromas on the nose, especially blackberry and blueberry, extended by a well-structured, powerful, firm, and long mouth. To be allowed to age for a few years.”
Tasting more recently than they did, I found the pinot approachable. It will drink now with some air to open and last two to four more years. Both it and the chardonnay are classicly Burgundian: solid, satisfying, and balanced, classic Burgundian

Burghound “subtle wood influences the smoky white orchard fruit and more discreet citrus-infused nose. There is more volume, if perhaps slightly less delineation, to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a first-rate balance on the clean, long, and more complex finale. Fine quality here. Outstanding”
