This Week's Tasting
Beppe Caviola and his Barolo
May 1, 2019
Peter writes, "Giuseppe Caviola began his wine career as a consultant. Italy’s authoritative 'Gambero Rosso' recognized him Winemaker of the Year in 2002."
The first Ca Viola wine was a Dolcetto. Then came the Barbera from a vineyard in Montelupo (mountain of the wolf). Eventually he built his cellar in Dogliani. He obtained special Nebbiolo vineyards, mostly in the commune of Novello and began making Barolo.
We will begin the tasting with the only white Beppe makes, the 2016 Langhe Riesling. Several producers are making Riesling in the Langhe now as the environment here suits the variety quite well. This one is dry and mineral with expressive aromatics. We will follow this with the 2016 Dolcetto d’Alba“Vilot”. This is in our quest to get more people interested in drinking Dolcetto wines.
The first Barbera is the 2016 Barbera d’Alba Brichet. This is traditional Barbera with notes of rich fruit and texture from a vineyard in Montelupo. The 2015 Barbera d’Alba “Bric du Luv”, also in Montelupo, is a smaller vineyard which produces wine which is more complex and age-worthy. This wine is a Federal Wine exclusive.
The 2014 Barolo Caviot is from vineyards mostly in the commune of Novello. The style is elegant and traditional. The 2013 Barolo “Sottocastello di Novello” is a single vineyard that expresses more power.
Gambero Rosso has awarded its highest honor Tre Bicchieri to several vintages of Beppe’s Barbera Bric De Luv as well as the 2013 Barolo “Sottocastello di Novello” in the tasting
