Chiara Condello

Its freshness, vigor, and intensity has made Chiara Condello’s Sangiovese di Predappio a favorite among our customers.

Her village, Predappio, with wine laws dating back to 1383 in Romagna to the east of Tuscany, claims to be the ancestral home of Sangiovese.

Although raised in a winemaking family, young Chiara was set for a white-collar career. Conflicted, she changed course and moved home to focus on wine, in 2015 purchasing vineyards that a neighbor was going to rip out. Inspired by profound 1930s bottles of her grandfather’s garagiste Sangiovese di Predappio, Chiara decided to resurrect the area’s “ ancient” style of winemaking.

That “ancient method” included native yeast fermentation in open-topped wooden or concrete vats, extended skin maceration and a portion of whole cluster fermentation. No process is forced, ever. Aging occurs in old Slavonian oak tonneau; wines are bottled without fining or filtering. Farming has always been organic, with a conversion to biodynamics within the last few years.

Support was sparse when she began. She was told that modernization was needed to re-elevate Predappio’s reputation. Fortunately, Chiara had the pride and conviction to carve her own path. Now she has become recognized as one of Italy’s most important young winemakers, being named   Best Italian Winemaker Under 35, and invited to Vinous Icons in 2024. Chiara has become a formidable ambassador for Predappio. Despite praise from many critics, she still offers her wine at a very reasonable price.

2023 Chiara Condello Sangiovese di Prediappo

Organic - Focused, elegant sangiovese highlights the finesse and minerality unique to Predappio. It is a precise and soulful wine with depth, purity, and vibrancy. Excellent with roasted poultry, mushroom risotto, pork loin, and especially veal osso bucco.

Aroma: Notes of deep dark cherry, pomegranate, chanterelle mushrooms, forest floor, and nutmeg. Mouth: Big and brooding, yet a juicy and fresh texture. Structured and well-integrated tannins with a healthy dose of acidity, Sangiovese is known for giving lift to the finish. Very Good-Excellent $29.99, Case, $305.88 ($25.49)
