2021 is a superb year for white wines, both dry and sweet. Particular recommendations
Sweet Wine
Ch. de Rayne Vigneau, 1er Cru Sauternes $48 by the bottle
“Honeyed caramel, hazelnuts, oranges and lemon and lime zest on the nose. Sweet but so satisfying too on the palate, this is quite opulent but with a fresh apple, peach and apricot centre that is lifted and quite gentle really. It's definitely on the more fresh, lifted, lively side than overtly unctuous but still has the structured and spiced edge to age. Well made with sparkle! This is characterful and playful - giving you sweetness for sure but with mouthwatering energy and verve. A lovely wine this vintage, such a joy to drink. One you want a glass of, and then another!” Hindle, Decanter
Dry White Wines
Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte, Pessac-Leognan $144 by the bottle
“The 2021 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is one of the great white wines of the vintage. Soaring in its aromatic intensity and sheer volume, the 2021 saturates every corner of the palate with its unctuousness and richness. Even with all of that volume, the 2021 remains bright and sculpted. Crushed rocks, lemon confit, orchard fruit, white pepper and mint build into the memorable finish. The 2021 is positively stunning, that's pretty much all there is to it.” Galloni, Vinous
Petit Haut Smith Lafitte, Pesssac-Leognan $39 (6 btl min)
“The 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc has a more generous nose than the Les Hauts de Smith Blanc thanks to the contribution of the 20% Sémillon. Yellow plum, dried pineapple and slithers of white peach feature on the nose. The palate is well balanced, taut and crisp, yet with real weight and depth. Lemongrass and stem ginger surface toward the finish. This punches well above its weight. A brilliant success!” Neal Martin, Vinous
Ch. Cos D’Estournel Blanc, Bordeaux $144 by the bottle
“ Fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the finest vintages I can remember tasting. Readers will find a white of tremendous stature and sheer palate presence. Lemon oil, chamomile, pear, baked apple tart and light tropical accents are all amplified in this dramatic, racy white from Cos d'Estournel. I can't wait to taste this in bottle.” Galloni, Vinous
Ch. Lurton Couhins-Lurton Blanc, Pessac-Leognan $46 by the bottle
the April frost destroyed 60% of grapes on the vine. However, a tiny quantity of remarkable wine was produced.
“A brilliant white in 2021 - this offers a zesty tang that hits straight away on the palate, juicy, alive, sharp in the best way with such brightness filling the mouth. Concentrated flavours of citrus fruit, lemongrass, peach and vanilla have pure energy giving the life force that drives this forward. Such precision, clarity and detail with a crystalline nature.” Hindle, Decanter
Ch. Malartic Lagraviere Blanc Pessac-Leognan $58 by the bottle
“Clean and precise on the nose, this unfurls nicely in the glass, taut and mineral-driven. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, lively and beautifully balanced, just the right amount of salinity with a cohesive and lingering finish. This is an outstanding white Pessac-Léognan.” Martin,Vinous
I would be remiss not to point out that Federal has a very strong range of the 2020 vintage for sale, still at very compelling prices. Our current 2020 availabilities are HERE.
