Moulin St. George

If I had to pick one non-classified St-Emilion to load up my cellar and guard jealously, it just might be this one." Jane Anson

Chateau Moulin Saint-Georges is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estate owned by the Vauthier family of Ch. Ausone since 1921. Although sometimes called a junior version of Chateau Ausone, the terroir at Château Moulin Saint-Georges is quite different. The 17-acre estate is composed of clay over limestone soils at the foot of the Saint-Emilion plateau below Ausone. The vines get extended afternoon sun exposure and are 25-30 years old.

The Ausone team does the winemaking. The grapes are picked by hand and sorted, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The wine goes through malolactic fermentation in barrel and aged up to 18 months in around 85 percent new French oak.

The 2020 -is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. About 3000 cases produced.

"soft, fruity, and easygoing, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. …, Moulin Saint-Georges is a wine of reserve and nuance. There's terrific energy and vibrancy here. I would not be in any rush to open this. This gorgeous, under-the-radar Saint-Émilion is not at all showy, but it will appeal tremendously to readers who like firm, classically built wines. I can't wait to see how it ages. This is a major sleeper." Antonio Galloni, Vinous)

"deep garnet-purple in color. Black raspberries, fresh blackberries, and chocolate-covered cherries jump from the glass, followed by suggestions of cedar chest, cardamom, camphor, and crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is so elegantly crafted, with beautifully rounded tannins and seamless freshness supporting the earth-laced black fruits, finishing long and mineral", Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent

"So full of deeply-drawn berry fruit, fresh and juicy with touches of liquorice bud and rosemary, thirst-quenching and yet thirst-inducing in that amazing way that limestone can both refresh and make you thirst for more at the same time. An excellent Moulin St Georges,…. at 1/10th the price of Ausone, Moulin Saint-Georges is the wine one can fill up the cellar with and drink every day. If I had to pick one non-classified St-Emilion to load up my cellar and guard jealously, it just might be this one." Jane Anson
