Barolo Vista

Barolo is famous as Italy's most noble red, a wine of power and depth, and with age in the bottle, fascinating "tertiary" nuance and complexity.

This Barolo is not imposing or monumental in that way. It's not a robust and silent muscleman that needs coaxing and airing to emerge from its tannic shell. It's soft and flirtatious, Barolo as a coquette, a pretty girl with flowers in her hair. In style, it's more like a much richer and broader pure mountain Nebbiolo from northern Piedmont or Lombardy. Even better, it's precocious. It's already softened at five years old and starting to show the savory, exotic tertiary notes of maturity.

Classic Barolo is often described as being violets and tar. This one is all violet, well perhaps primrose and warm. It's all sweetness and light, with no hard edges. Nor does it want hours of decanting to show its stuff. Lighter in body, it's a Barolo for warmer times with any red meat, cheese, or even meatier fish on the grill.

It is no hackneyed mass-produced wine. It's grown and bottled at Moniero Carbone, a well-respected century-old estate with vineyards in Roero and Barolo.

Price is another sweet thing. This is the least expensive, character-filled Barolo we could find. It's a bargain at our discounted price.

I recently sent a bottle to a good customer who thought he liked only Cabernet and certainly not Barolo. The day he opened it, he called me for a case and tells me thatnhe has been raving about it to his friends. It's that good. Don't miss it.
