2016, The Perfect Brunello di Montalcino Vintage
Poggiotondo Brunello di Montalcino + Pietranera Brunello di Montalcino + Piancornello Brunello di Montalcino + Celestino Pecci Brunello di Montalcino
August 20, 2021
Okay, so virtually every producer and winemaker, as well as the writers who rate the wines, say that the 2016 vintage for Brunello di Montalcino is perfect. I have nothing to say to contradict this opinion. Most of the 2016 Brunello di Montalcinos have now sold out. I am happy to say we will be receiving some late releases from three of the best producers.
The 2016 Poggiotondo Brunello di Montalcino is a single vineyard bottling from the Agricola Centolani estate. The vineyard has dark volcanic soil and is in the heart of southern Montalcino. The wine is very traditional and aged in both tonneaux and Slavonian oak barrels. It is very flavorful and balanced and a great value. The 2016 Pietranera Brunello di Montalcino is a different single vineyard bottling from Agricola Centolani. Also traditional, this is a warm, dry, velvety wine. The vineyard covers the whole southern part of the hill facing the ancient dormant volcano Mount Amiata
The Piancornello estate also faces Mount Amiata. The 2016 Piancornello Brunello di Montalcino is a genuine elegant and generous Brunello. Claudio and Silvia Batazzi cultivate these vineyards sustainably and were among the first in Montalcino to be certified organic. The wines are fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and long macerations. Aging in large oak casks for three years follows. This all happens on stony red clay volcanic soils, which contribute great minerality.
The 2016 Celestino Pecci Brunello di Montalcino is the result of a family argument. Celestino’s family wanted him to leave Montalcino and go into the financial industry. Well, he wanted to be a farmer and bought this property in the heart of Montalcino in 1968 and began the long hard work of restoring it. Then the family decided to support him, and to this day, it is a family love affair with the land. Celestino and Idria Pecci have made a great little estate here. To this day, Idria says that every harvest is a celebration.
