2014 Ramey Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard Russian River

Great Deal on a Fine Chardonnay Coming into its Own
September 9, 2019

David Ramey

“David Ramey …has published academic papers, pushed boundaries in the cellar and pursued the classic Burgundian techniques that are the benchmarks for Chardonnay around the world. His influence has been profound, grounded in tradition, research and experience, all driven by a vision that has helped reset the equation for great California Chardonnay.”

“He’s an absolute icon and pioneer to be sure. When you think about California Chardonnay, he’s on Mount Rushmore.”

We have been fans of David Ramey’s winemaking for well over 25 years following his progess through Chalk Hill, Dominus, Rudd Estate and since 1996 at his eponymous winery. In that time we have seen his reputation to the level of the two quotes above and his wines

Ramey’s Chardonnays are restrained but powerful on release, with flavors that fully develop and expand with time in the cellar, a la Bourgogne. At its release two years ago critics’ notes on the 2014 Ramey Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard were all laudatory but stressed exactly that:

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate "Youthfully mute at this primary stage, it offers suggestions of lemon curd, white peaches and white grapefruit with underlying notes of honeyed toast and butterscotch. The palate is full-on seduction with an appealingly oily texture and tons of peaches and cream flavors, finishing long with a lively lift."

Steve Tanzer, Vinous “Pale, bright yellow. Aromas of lemon zest, wild herbs and minerals. Dense, thick and savory, showing an exotic orange blossom note and a building floral element from the small percentage of Chardonnay Musqué vines but still quite youthfully tight, with a dominant flavor of crushed rock. This baby...needs time."

Wine Spectator “Elegant and stylish, with a trim mix of honeydew, green apple, gravelly earth and light oak notes. An understated style that will benefit from cellaring.”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous " the most exuberant and layered of David Ramey's Chardonnays. It is also stylistically the wine that is closest in style to past. Rich, sumptuous and layered, the Ritchie expresses intensity in all of its dimensions. Even with all of its richness, the 2014 confers aromatic intensity and freshness. This, too, is very nicely done."

It was the least giving and most closed of the Ramey upper end Chardonnays I sampled two years ago. Tasted again this March, it had filled out and opened with strong sensuous fruit and a distinctive sweet lemon note.

Ironically just as the wine is coming into its own, the local distributor had to move it to make room for the coming new vintage, which is we became able to offer it at a price that is comparable to many more basic chardonnays. There are only seven cases
