Wines for Easter, and Passover too

April 17, 2019

Four wines captured palates last week, all not just for holiday drinking.

Foremost, the Nebbiolo-based 2012 Proprieta Sperino Uvaggiowas elegant and refined, bright and very, very long. People agreed that it was a very elegant wine for a very reasonable price., for which peter deserves full credit. It is just entering its plateau of maturity, with a few years to go yet. Many people have taken advantage of our offer. If you love Piemontese wine and have not yet, don’t miss it.

Sardinia’s 2017 Raica Vermentinodi Gallura Sarraiola got a lot of love also even more so as the tasting when on and warmer and it aerated, it bloomed on the palate. Lots of intensity, lots of flavor density and complexity here.

Last week’s promised Pinot Noir did not arrive in time, but we found something even better.Anne Sophie Dubois  is one of the rising stars of Beaujolais Crus. Several of our customers have become fans of her reserve Fleurie Clepsydre. Starting with 2017, she is replacing it with the single vineyard Les Labourons, from which most of it has been drawn. Last week’s tasting proved it a fortuitous start. The 2017 is extraordinary, both concentrated and well balanced with tannins & acids. BUTa killing spring frost decreed that there is very little of it. After last week’s tasting we have just a couple of cases left. There is no more.

The 2018 Lorenzo Negro Rosato San Martin was well liked also. Based on Nebbiolo, it showed a tangy spice and good acidity that will make it good pairing for a lot of number of dishes. It also opned with air, which shows it will be showing more fruit in the very short term.

Less enthusiasm for the other two wines; The 2016 Chappellet Chardonnay Napa  showed more oak than most of last week’s tasters like. Those who did found it had enough acidity to balance, a very good wine for their taste

The Israeli 2013 Jerusalem Vineyards 3400 Shiraz  very oaky and dense in a modern extracted style, again not to most tasters’ palates.
