Domaine Serene at the Top of Their Game

The Oregon wines were as good as expected. The surprise was in the quality and balance of the Domaine de la Cree burgundies.
May 3, 2017

The Montagny was quite popular. Most liked its density and harmonious flavors. In the lighter 2013 vintage, the 2013 Domaine de la Crée Santenay Gravieres 1er Cru  de;livered again a harmony and complexity that few including me had tasted in a Santenay of any vintage. It was classic Santenay, but with the hard acid edges and  minerality that most often mark and make rustic the wines of the commune, melded into a harmonious whole. With air it drinks now. It will age for a decade..

Matt Viola of Serene  was cagey about the composition of the Rose Cuvee 9. I think it is safe to say that it it's a blend of 2015 and 2016. It has a heft and weight that few other roses have, a wine not for sipping for meals but for meals. It was popular also.

The two vintages of the Yamhill Cuvee divided the tasters. The vast majority preferred the heavier richer 2014. Dyed in the wool Pinot heads appreciated the articulation and balanced appositions of the lighter 2013. I preferred the 2013 for drink ingnow. My higher valuation of the 2014 is based on what I think it will be in a few years.

Matt called the 2013 Evenstad Reserve powerful. I would call it sublime. Although pleasant now, it will become much better and deeper in another five years.  and last for a further 10.
