Domaine Drouhin

Some very fine wines last week. People were attracted by their poise and balance. There were frequent comments about how they expressed a burgundian sensibility

 .

The 2015 Cloudline Pinot Noir stood out for its extraordinary value for money, not surprising because it is mostly drawn from Drouhin's two estate vineyards, Dundee and RoseRock. The quality of the grapes is evident in a wine with a depth and concentration greater than most we have tasted at its $21 price.

Both Chardonnays lived up to their reviews in Vinous below, with the RoseRock being the richer and more Cote de Beaune style, and the Arthur much more mineral.

All the estate pinots showed very well, with the Drouhin labeled wines in the slight ascendent in general tasters' preference. Both Estate Pinot Noir and Laurene were impeccable.

White

2015 RoseRock Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills " Vinous - "Potent, mineral-laced aromas of orange pith, pear nectar, nectarine and white flowers, plus a subtle ginger flourish. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering intense orchard and citrus fruit and honeysuckle flavors complemented by a refreshingly bitter quinine note. Finishes with very good clarity and minerally thrust, leaving floral and marmalade notes behind." 37; Mixed Case, 33.3; Case, 31.45

2014 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Chardonnay Arthur, Dundee Hills Vinous - "Pale gold. High-pitched, mineral-accented aromas of tangerine, pear and white flowers carry subtle ginger and anise overtones. Lively and sharply focused in the mouth, offering palate-staining orchard and citrus fruit flavors complicated by a refreshingly bitter quinine nuance and a hint of toasty lees. Finishes with outstanding clarity and stony thrust, leaving floral and citrus pith notes behind." 42; Mixed Case, 37.8; Case, 35.7

Red

2015 Cloudline Pinot Noir Willamette Valley; Value Color: plummy pretty; Aroma: clean firm, very raspberry, clean, deep fruit; Mouth: clean light mineral firm, rather deeply spicy mineral light delicate; Very Good Plus 21.99; Mixed Case, 19.79; Case, 18.69

2014 RoseRock Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills Vinous - " Brilliant red. Ripe red and blue fruits, candied flowers, incense and a hint of licorice on the deeply perfumed nose. A spine of juicy acidity provides lift and structure to sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors that open up slowly on the back half. Delivers a suave blend of power and finesse and finishes impressively long, showing resonating red fruit character and sneaky, harmonious tannins." 37; Mixed Case, 33.3; Case, 31.45

2014 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills

Burghound "A perfumed and very pretty nose combines notes of red currant, briar, violet and plum hints. There is good vibrancy and freshness to the utterly delicious middle weight flavors that possess an attractive mouth feel, all wrapped in a dusty, balanced and lingering finish where a hint of cherry pit emerges." 48; Mixed Case, 43.2; Case, 40.8

2014 RoseRock Pinot Noir, Zephirine  Wine Advocate -"intense bay leaves, fresh cranberries and rhubarb notes on the nose with underlying garrigue, game and forest floor hints. Medium-bodied and sporting a solid frame of chewy tannins, it offers a great core of herb-laced earthy flavors and a long finish." 69; Mixed Case, 62.1; Case, 58.65

2013 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir, Laurene Vinous - "Vibrant mineral- and spice-accented aromas of fresh red berries and fresh rose, with a hint of incense building with air. Boasts excellent clarity and lift, with sappy strawberry and floral pastille flavors joined by a suave hint of spice cake. Finishes long and sweet, with supple tannins and emphatic floral persistence. Here's 2013 at its best, offering a suave blend of power, concentration and vivacity." 79; Mixed Case, 71.10; Case, 67.15
