Marques de Vargas

Marques de Vargas

This offer is from three different wineries in Spain with the same owner. He shares with all of us a great passion for fine wine. Pelayo de la Mata is the eleventh Marquis de Vargas and he has certain characteristics in common with the wines he produces. He is elegant, sophisticated and fun to be around.

We will begin with the  2015 Pazo de San Mauro Albarino. This is a winery that Pelayo bought fairly recently because he wanted to produce a noble white wine and this is the right place to do it. In the southern Rias Baixas along the Mino river the conditions are perfect for growing Albarino and the place is also amazingly beautiful. These are old vines in soil of high granite content and the resulting wine is aromatic, mineral and balanced with crisp acidity.

Next we will go the 2011 Conde de San Cristobal Ribera del Duero. This estate is in the heart of Ribera del Duero in Penafiel. The wine is rich and aromatic Tempranillo and aged in French and American oak. Like all of Pelayo’s vineyards the old vines are grown organically to low yields and limited production. All of his wines are made with 100% estate fruit that is grown in the manner of a well tended garden.

Which gets us to the original property and the 2010 Marques de Vargas Rioja Reserva. This estate dates back to 1840 when The Marquis de Vargas planted the first vines. They are located in the heart of Rioja Alta. This is elegant and sophisticated Rioja Reserva with balanced oak treatment, ripe fruit aromas and a layered texture.

And all of these wines are great value and will make you happy.
