Mastrojanni

Gabriele Mastrojanni, a Roman lawyer, founded the estate in 1975 on virgin land south of Montalcino. The potential of the site quickly became apparent. Especially following Andrea Machetti's appointment as winemaker in 1992, Mastrojanni has become one of Montalcino's finest producers. The Illy family of coffee fame took control of the estate several years ago and has invested to improve quality. This is a grand estate on the rise.

We have a one-time opportunity to offer reduced prices on their highly acclaimed Brunello and a prime vintage of their best vineyard, Vigna Schiena d'Asin0, which is just coming into its plateau of best drinking.

2018 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

"wafts up with a savory and smoky mix of rich cherry sauce, wilted violets, and grilled herbs. It's round and almost juicy in character, with a potent wave of ripe red fruits and autumnal spice that leaves a collection of fine tannins in their wake. The 2018 finishes youthfully structured, with nuances of sour citrus and salted licorice that slowly taper off." - Eric Guido, Vinous

"a smoky nose, punctuated with iron and crushed rocks. Fruity charms of dark cherry and currants appear on the palate, still countered by stony minerals. Warming alcohol lends richness, and the tannins are dusty and dry on the entry, then sweeten up on the finish.” - Michaela Morris, Decanter

Critics’ consensus Excellent

2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino

'Donkey's Back is the name of this vineyard at the crest of a hill. The vines were planted in 1975. This vine was made only in the best years. 6,000 bottles were produced in 2013.

"might prove difficult to find and buy. If you do locate this wine however, I am very happy to recommend it despite its high price. All the senses are treated to a full-on Brunello experience that excels on all fronts, from intensity and balance to length of mouthfeel. …. The buoyant bouquet delivers dark fruit backed by tarry spice and savory cured tobacco. This wine offers sophistication, power and elegance." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"Brightly saturated full red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, sweet spices, orange peel, and minerals are nuanced and deep. Silky on entry, then bracing, penetrating and complex in the mid-palate, with outstanding laser-like focus and energy to the red berry, mint, licorice, mineral, and candied violet flavors. Superb tension coupled with outstanding clarity and cut make this one of the better Brunellos released this year. Finishes long and fine-grained." Ian D'Agata, Vinous March 2019

"captivates with notes of crushed ashen stones and savory herbs, lifted by hints of camphor and cinnamon-dusted blackberries. This is sheer elegance, with textures of pure silk propelled by vibrant acidity as mineral-tinged wild berries and exotic spices slowly saturate the palate. Still quite youthful, the 2013 tapers off with fine-grained tannins and hints of sour citrus, maintaining a lovely lift as suggestions of licorice fade. … easily one of the top wines of the vintage. - Eric Guido, Vinous, February 2024
