2015 Nicolas Jay Pinot Noir Willamette

Classic Begets Classic
May 31, 2017

Tracey Kendall

A visit last week from Tracey Kendall, associate winemaker at Willamette Valley's Nicolas Jay. She works with Jean-Nicolas Meo to make a Pinot Noir that nears the imprint of the sumptuous style of  Meo-Camuzet burgundies. We were entranced with the inaugural 2014 vintage.

Tracy brought with her the 2015. It is even finer. In that warmer vintage, she and Jean-Nicolas lightened their extractions and used somewhat less finishing heat, a tannin softening technique Jean-Nicolas had learned from Henri Jayer.

The wine has gained from another year of their learning its vineyards. It is more elegant than the 2014, has a more Burgundian structure and a stronger sense of that subdued forest and herb garnishing note in nose and mouth. We could not resist it. It will need either airing or aging.

2015 Nicolas Jay Pinot NoirOrganic; Color: medium dark, ; Aroma: lightly herbal,  firm,  clean herbal,  flint, clean racy, an lean burgundian Pinot note; Mouth: very pure light oak, structured rather fine, lush, elegant a touch tannic,  fine, precise, very rich, poised; Excellent 69; Mixed Case, 62.1; Case, 58.65
