2012 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino

Pride of Place
September 11, 2017

Le Chiuse

The wine in this offer has a star pedigree for Brunello di Montalcino. The estate was developed by Tancredi Biondi- Santi on the Montosoli hill north of Montalcino. He planted a special clone of Sangiovese Grosso to use exclusively for the Biondi –Santi Brunello Riserva. Eventually the estate was inherited by Tancredi’s grand-daughter Simonetta Valiani. In the 1990s she continued to let Biondi-Santi use their grapes for the Riserva. Then she decided to produce the wine, along with her husband, Nicolo Magneli and son, Lorenzo under the Le Chiuse label. Ever since, Le Chiuse Brunello has been an elegant, sophisticated and balanced wine with great aging potential. The 2012 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino is from a great vintage and is a stand out traditional wine.

On my last trip to Tuscany in May I was too busy in Chianti Classico to have time to visit Montalcino. However Lorenzo called and insisted that I come down to the farm for dinner. During the dinner we did a vertical tasting of the vintages 2012 back to 2001. Let me just say this is one of the most classic styles of Brunello I have ever tasted. Lorenzo uses 50 to 60 year old vines with very low yields. The winery has a gravity system and the wood is large Slavonian oak botti.

Lorenzo has also made an interesting decision regarding his Riserva. As of the 2010 vintage he will not be releasing the Riserva until it is 10 years old. This is an amazing place.

2012 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino:  Dark-skinned berry, forest floor, pipe tobacco, new leather and balsamic notes float out of the glass. On the elegantly structured palate, taut, polished tannins and vibrant acidity frame ripe red cherry, exotic spice and aromatic herb flavors. A lingering star anise note announces the close. Impeccably balanced and loaded with class, it's still young and needs time to fully develop. Excellent to Superb 68/bottle

Special six pack: 6 bottles of the above for a special price of $347 (57.80/bottle)
